Year 6 Trip to Kwetu

31st March 2023

Kwetu is an amazing community project, located in the heart of Mtwapa, along the beautiful creek. It was established back in 1996 and recognised as an NGO in 1997. The projects they do are based around sustainable development, economic growth, self- empowerment, human rights and conservation. You can find out more about their work here: https://www.kwetukenya.org/

Our topic in Year 6 has been about economics and trade. This trip was about looking at trade and economics at the grass roots level in our local community, alongside the importance of sustainable farming and looking after our environment. As human beings, we have a responsibility to ensure that our activities are mindful and conscious of our impact on the natural world. This has been a big focus of our global citizenship awareness in Year 6 and, indeed, throughout BMIS.

The children loved their walk through the mangroves, watching the crabs and seeing how fish ponds have been created, using the natural tides of the creek, to create a sustainable income for local people and their families. The whole area has been reforested with vital mangrove trees and we enjoyed learning more about this crucial ecosystem.

We then had the opportunity to make our own neem oil mosquito repellant candles and hear about how this industry can make a difference to local people, using natural resources they have all around them.

We finished up our trip with a naughty ice-cream treat at Yul’s and an unexpected stop at the stunning Haller Park (another celebration of reforestation and conservation in our local area) before heading back to school. I hope the children were able to tell you all about it!
