Year 5 News

13th May 2021

If Year 5 had a theme this week, then it would have been water. We did not just enjoy quenching our thirst; we directed all our senses in water and were delighted to make some interesting observations during our investigations.

In Geography, we learned about renewable energy and were able to investigate hydro power by making our own turbines and using water force to turn them. The children were able to note the relationship between the number of turns the turbines made and the height from which the water was dropping. The higher the height, the faster the turbines turned.

We focused on water resistance in our Science lesson and the children were able to demonstrate the effect of streamlined shapes on the speed of boats. They observed that boats with a streamlined shape moved faster than the other boats. We concluded that streamlined shapes helped reduce water resistance hence the boats moved faster.
