13th June 2026
I am very proud of my class this week. It has been quite difficult for them for two main reasons:
1) They have had a week of assessments and
2) They are excited about the residential trip in week 8 (Monday 15th June to Friday 19th June).
Having said all that, Year 5 produced some excellent work across the curriculum. In English, we have been mastering the skill of “Show Don’t Tell” in order to create interesting sentences and paragraphs. We are writing our own short stories and have taken our main characters and described aspects of them using the “Show Don’t Tell” techniques.
I have often stated to my class that sometimes, it is very difficult to see how some of what we learn can be applied to their own lives or real life. This is not the case for the unit of work we have been doing in maths. We have been learning about the various types of measurement and the units involved with them; be it length, mass or volume. The class had to measure a range of items in the classroom. We divided the items to be measured into 2 categories: Fixed and Not fixed. Resulting in them having to use string and rulers as well display team work in order to ensure accuracy. It was an excellent, fun and interesting learning experience. The last task being to measure the circumference of their own wrists and compare with others. This led to another conversation about how to show our results - which tied in once again to a previous unit of work looking at graphs and tables.
In geography, we were learning about mountains and comparing mountain ranges in the UK with Kenya. We learnt about the topography of different continents and, similar to the maths session, it raised conversations about how to record the heights of mountains in Kenya and compare it with mountains found in different continents. But as already mentioned, all these served as an appetiser to the main event: Year 5 and 6 Residential Trip. More on that next week.
