Year 5 - A Varied and Engaging Start

9th May 2026

After an enjoyable and relaxing 2nd term break, Year 5 have returned to school full of vigour and drive, ready for the final term! We have shared the importance of not just knowing the meaning of BMIS, but understanding the meaning behind:

  • Building BRILLIANCE together
  • Making a difference
  • Inspiring each other
  • Striving for Success

A challenge that I myself am compelled to do - to lead by example - across the curriculum subjects. In the previous few weeks, there have been many stand outs. In PSHE we have been discussing what it means to be part of a family - specifically in terms of roles and responsibilities. The class worked in pairs as they walked around “10 Stations” in class, discussing who is responsible for family roles including washing the dishes; making the bed; looking after siblings and cooking. As you can imagine, the children enjoyed discussing their difference of opinions!

In English, we have been writing our own non-chronological report (NCR) on an ancient civilisation. The children particularly enjoyed researching online about the different civilisations, understanding all the while that we are neither “Copy Cats” or “Sentence Stealers”. This subject dovetailed wonderfully with our Topic unit of study: Mayans. The children were fascinated with the different gods of ancient civilisations, including Mayans. In Art, we drew Mayan masks and coloured them in and followed this up by drawing Mayan gods - which we found required quite a lot of concentration as the Mayan gods were drawn with a high degree of intricacy.

Outside the classroom, I am pleased to mention that 3 of our students have travelled to the UK to take part in the World School Games swimming competition. We wish them luck! Hopefully they will have a wonderful time experiencing another country and culture, as well as performing to their best ability!
