At Braeburn Mombasa International School, sustainability is an integral part of our school culture and daily practices. We believe that creating a sustainable future begins with educating and empowering young people to become responsible environmental stewards.
One of the strengths of our sustainability programme is the active involvement of students. We encourage students to take ownership of environmental initiatives and participate in decision-making processes that promote sustainable living within our school community. We are currently working towards achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement in environmental responsibility.
Sustainable practices are already embedded in our everyday routines. Students are encouraged to serve themselves only the amount of food they can finish, helping to minimise food waste. Energy conservation is also part of our culture, with students and staff routinely switching off lights, screens, and other electrical equipment when they are not in use.
To reduce plastic waste, students use reusable water bottles, which can be refilled at designated water dispensers located around the school. We also encourage students to bring their snacks and meals in reusable lunch and snack boxes rather than disposable packaging and wrappers.
Responsible waste management is another important aspect of our sustainability efforts. Waste is sorted into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories, helping students understand the importance of proper waste disposal and recycling practices.
What makes our approach particularly meaningful is that sustainability is integrated into the curriculum through dedicated sustainability units. Environmental awareness is therefore not taught as a separate concept but is woven into students’ everyday learning experiences. As a result, our students are highly aware of environmental issues and understand how their actions can contribute to a more sustainable world.
Our current Environment Champions, Alexander from Year 5 and Fatema from Year 8, play a valuable role in leading sustainability initiatives and inspiring their peers to make environmentally responsible choices. We are actively inviting more students who are passionate about environmental conservation to join the team and contribute their ideas and enthusiasm.
Through these initiatives, Braeburn Mombasa International School continues to foster a culture of sustainability where students, staff, and the wider community work together to protect and preserve our environment for future generations.
