Musical Structure: Year 7 Explores Classical Composition Structures

8th March 2024

In the world of music, organising musical material is the secret to creating memorable tunes. Take Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, for example. Its popularity is due in part to the clever use of repetition, making the music catchy and unforgettable. Our Year 7 students are discovering this magic by learning about the structure in classical music.

This term, our young musicians are diving into the classical music universe. They are looking at how composers like Beethoven put their pieces together. One key thing they are learning is about Binary form – a structure with two parts, A and B. Our Year 7 students are taking this concept and putting it into action, composing their own music on the piano. This hands-on experience is helping them understand how to organise their music, creating pieces that are not only clever but also stick in your head – just like the classics.

The result? Some fantastic original compositions from our Year 7 students. These pieces not only show off their emerging musical talents but also reveal a deep understanding of how structure makes music special. With these young composers at the keys, we are in for some exciting and memorable musical journeys ahead.
