Mombasa Open Debate Championships

What a fantastic weekend for our students at the Mombasa Open Debate Championships!
Our team of 33 students travelled to the event, bringing together a wonderful mix of experienced competitors and first-time participants. After weeks of preparation, research and practice, students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, confidence and determination, while also finding plenty of time for fun and friendship along the way.
Across the weekend, we had students competing in debating, public speaking and quiz events, developing their communication, critical thinking and teamwork skills. They tackled complex motions, delivered a wide range of speeches and learnt from both expert feedback and the opportunity to watch other talented competitors in action.
Several of our debate teams reached the semi-finals, while our Senior Team of Poul, Kylan, Ashley and Natalie secured an impressive third place overall. In the Junior category, Leone was recognised as the second-best speaker out of more than 150 debaters, with the team including Hafsa and Sienna finishing second overall. In Public Speaking, Mercy was crowned Elementary Champion, while Aaryan achieved an excellent third place in the Junior category. Beyond the podium finishes, there were many, many achievements to celebrate, including first-time participants and students trying their skills in new events.
While these results are certainly worth celebrating, what impressed us most was the spirit shown by our students throughout the weekend. Their hard work, preparation, teamwork and willingness to challenge themselves were evident at every stage. We are incredibly proud of how they represented the school and of everything they achieved, both inside and outside the competition rooms. The growth in our students’ skills was clearly noticeable between this year and last, and it has left our students hungry with determination to participate again next year.
