Key Stage 3 and IGCSE History Highlights (Years 7–10)

7th June 2025

Year 7 – Medieval Life and Kenya’s Independence Journey

This term, our Year 7 learners have been exploring the medieval period, delving into key historical events such as the Norman Conquest, medieval justice, feudalism, and the Black Death. Through these topics, students have gained a deeper understanding of how societies were structured in the past and how power was exercised.

As we progress through the term, our focus will shift to Kenya, where students will trace its path to independence, examining the role of resistance, leadership, and national identity in shaping modern Kenya.

Year 8 – Revolutions, Empires, and Warfare

Following our in-depth study of the French Revolution, Year 8 students have continued their historical exploration by examining the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. We have looked at his early life, how he seized power, and what made him such a compelling figure in European history. Students have analysed key events such as the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon’s military tactics, and his role as Emperor of France. These lessons have sparked rich discussion about leadership, ambition, and the impact of war.

Year 9 – Revolution, Communism, and the Soviet Union

Year 9 students have been fully immersed in the dramatic and often turbulent history of Russia in the 20th century. We have been studying the Russian Civil War, War Communism**, and the introduction of the New Economic Policy (NEP). Learners have investigated the power struggles between Trotsky and Stalin, the impact of collectivisation, Stalin’s Five-Year Plans, and the purges that defined his regime. Our focus has been on analysing how ideology, power, and fear shaped Soviet society under Stalin.

Year 10 – IGCSE Germany Depth Study

Our Year 10 IGCSE students are progressing through the Germany depth study, focusing on the impact of the Great Depression and the rise of the Nazi Party. Students have investigated how Hitler became Chancellor, the consolidation of Nazi power through events such as the Reichstag Fire and the Night of the Long Knives, and how Hitler established and maintained a dictatorship. We have explored key aspects of Nazi control, including propaganda, youth indoctrination, and opposition, helping students understand how totalitarian regimes function.

We are proud of how our students are engaging with challenging historical themes and developing important skills in critical thinking, source analysis, and empathy. It has been a dynamic and thought-provoking term across all year groups.

Every lesson uncovers a new story. We are just getting started!
