FS2 children have settled really well back into school. They have been enjoying a wide range of exciting and enriching learning experiences. Over the past weeks, they have explored our topic Countries and Cultures, made excellent progress in phonics, guided reading, and mathematics, and thoroughly enjoyed outdoor and child-initiated learning.
The children learned about the countries they come from and discovered special facts about each one. They enjoyed creating flags to represent the diverse cultures in our class. Some highlights included: Kenya – learning about the people and wildlife. Uganda – exploring the foods enjoyed by Ugandan people and learning about the crowned crane featured on the Ugandan flag. The children are excited to continue learning about Canada, Latvia, Mozambique, and Taiwan in the coming weeks.
The children have made significant progress in recognising sounds and blending them to read words. They have been taking part in guided reading and independent reading activities. They are now focusing on: learning digraphs, reading tricky words, writing simple phrases and sentences. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and the joy they show as they recognise letters and develop their reading and writing skills.
In Maths, the children have been learning how to use a 10 Frame to show numbers from 1 to 10. They are building a strong understanding of number sense and exploring how the same number can be shown in different patterns on a 10 Frame. They have also been learning different ways to show numbers.
The children have loved exploring the outdoors. The mud kitchen, sand and water tray, bike track, construction, role play, creative art and craft activities, and football have been particular highlights. These experiences support imaginative play and teamwork. Most recently, the boys transformed the carpet in our classroom into a football pitch. They used small wooden blocks to form the pitch boundary, small world figures as players, and even improvised a football using a marble! It was wonderful to observe their imaginative play, collaboration, communication, teamwork, and the creative narrative they built. They were deeply engaged in their game.
Here are some photos of our learning experiences!
