Citizen Engagement in Action

20th June 2026

Preparing students to lead, listen and make a difference

At Braeburn Mombasa International School, we believe that education should prepare students not only to succeed academically, but also to participate thoughtfully and responsibly in the world around them. This term, students are exploring the theme of citizen engagement through an exciting political debate and crisis-response learning activity.

The focus of the activity is to help learners understand that citizenship is active. It involves listening to different viewpoints, asking informed questions, sharing ideas respectfully, and taking part in decisions that affect the community. Students will consider how citizens can influence society through debate, voting, campaigning, volunteering, raising awareness and working with organisations that support positive change.

As part of their preparation, students will work in teams to examine real-world political and social challenges. They will be asked to think like responsible leaders by identifying key problems, considering who is affected, proposing realistic solutions and explaining how citizens can play a role in responding to the issue.

The political debate will give students the opportunity to take on leadership roles, present their policy ideas, respond to questions and defend their decisions. This will help them develop confidence in public speaking, collaboration, critical thinking and respectful disagreement. It will also encourage them to recognise that leadership is not simply about giving instructions, but about listening carefully, making fair decisions and acting in the interests of others.

Through this learning experience, students will also reflect on the wider importance of civic responsibility. They will explore how governments, communities and international organisations can respond to crises, shape laws and influence public policy. By doing so, learners will gain a deeper understanding of how political decisions affect everyday life, from education and public health to employment, security and the environment.

Most importantly, the activity reminds students that their voices matter. Citizen engagement begins when young people learn to think critically, speak confidently, listen respectfully and contribute constructively to their communities. At Braeburn Mombasa, we are proud to provide opportunities that help students become informed, compassionate and responsible global citizens.
