In this half of the term, the focus has been on developing employability skills through various engaging activities. The exploration began with the concept of sportsmanship, highlighting how skills learned in sports can connect to future job opportunities.

Key skills explored:

  1. Listening skills:
Students examined the importance of active listening, learning to remember key points during conversations, which is essential in both sports and the workplace.
  2. Speaking skills:
Clear and effective communication was practised, with an emphasis on speaking in groups and to individuals, ensuring everyone can convey their thoughts confidently.
  3. Problem-solving skills:
Critical and creative thinking were fostered as students tackled problems, understanding how to approach challenges effectively.
  4. Teamwork skills:
Through various role plays and group activities, the significance of collaboration was highlighted. Students worked together towards common goals, enhancing their teamwork abilities. Engaging in discussions and completing crossword puzzles allowed them to express their ideas and learn from one another.
  5. Communication skills:
The importance of adapting communication styles to suit different audiences was discussed, alongside effective non-verbal communication techniques.
  6. Time management and organisation skills:
Students explored strategies for prioritising tasks and managing their time effectively, skills that will benefit them in both their studies and future careers.

Reflection activity

Students participated in a skills audit to assess their current abilities, identifying strengths and areas for development. They engaged in role plays to understand the application of these skills in real-life situations. Additionally, they took part in a live gameplay session through football, which helped them grasp the importance of teamwork and communication. The session concluded with a reflection on how the game went, discussing connections to the skills they had already learned. This reflective practice encouraged them to think about how these skills can be applied across different subjects, from creative arts to science, mathematics, and languages.

Looking ahead

These employability skills are crucial not only for academic success but also for preparing for future work environments. By embracing these skills now, students will be better equipped for the challenges ahead.

This term has been an enriching experience, filled with engaging discussions and interactive activities. The commitment to developing these important skills will continue in future lessons.
