Last week, Year 6 finally made it to Mida Creek! Having missed out on this brilliant trip in Year 4 because of COVID, and being rained off twice last term, it seemed as if we were destined not to go but we are so happy we did because it was “the best trip ever”, according to many of the happy Y6 children.
Despite the roadworks and due, in part, to some excellent new road sections along the way, we made good time on the journey. Hassan, our knowledgeable and expert guide, was there to meet us and guide us through the mangroves. He explained the importance of the mangrove ecosystem and amazed us by explaining how the mangroves have adapted to cope with salt water- they used to live in fresh water! We found hundreds of fiddler crabs and watched them waving at their ‘ladies’ with their huge claw- much like waving a banner!
Our adventurous walk above the mangrove sand flats on the boardwalk felt much like a scene from ‘Indiana Jones’, and we were able to observe other life, such as gobis and mudskippers from above. Whelk shells and molluscs were everywhere- and we learnt that you should never remove shells from a habitat as they are all recycled!
After a fabulous canoe ride with the fishermen- marvelling at a leopard stingray that had been caught- we enjoyed our lunch on an island in the middle of the creek. We then swam and boated back to the mainland as the tide carried us in.
It was a fantastic day of learning about adaptation, evolution and sustainability along with a lot of laughter and fun. We deserved it after all our hard work!
Should you go there for a visit one weekend? Absolutely- we highly recommend it!
