Last Thursday, Year 6 was lucky enough to get the chance to visit two very special grassroots projects, right here in our locality: Bombolulu Cultural and Craft Centre and Shanzu Girl Guides. Both centres specialise in working with differently-abled artisans and empowering them to become economically independent. The fair trade aspect to both centres ensure that a fair price is paid for the beautiful artwork and merchandise produced by these talented artisans. The children certainly had an enjoyable time purchasing some of the creations from the gift shops.
The day really got the children thinking about how fortunate we are and how we can give a little back to those people all around us who are not as lucky. It also enabled them to understand that different doesn't mean inferior; the children were amazed to see the detailed and intricate work that the artisans were engaged in.
We thoroughly enjoyed our short stop at Yul’s for some delicious ice cream and a respite from the heat- and we are all a little ahead with our festive shopping!
