Year 6 has enjoyed a remarkably busy and productive term, and the momentum is only building! Beyond the stage, the students have demonstrated incredible dedication to their literacy, historical studies, and mathematical reasoning.
Our first major project involved the creation of bespoke information books, inspired by the surreal creatures of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’. Using Book Creator, the children designed engaging, imaginative texts that adhered to the formal requirements of a non-chronological report.
Furthermore, this half term, the students joined the rest of Primary in focusing on fantasy narratives with an environmental theme. The resulting stories are truly impressive; they are clearly structured, rich in ambitious vocabulary, and carry powerful messages about our natural world. We also celebrated World Book Day with a range of exciting activities and some truly inventive costumes that brought our favourite characters to life!
In Science, we have been busy classifying organisms, learning how to categorise the natural world based on specific characteristics. The children took on the role of researchers, conducting experiments to test if yeast is alive and observing the fascinating (if slightly internal-turning!) process of growing mouldy bread to understand microbial growth and the conditions fungi need to thrive.
In Geography, we have begun to study Trade and Economics, with a particular focus on the exports and imports of Kenya. This linked well with our History unit on the fascinating and sobering realities of World War II, such as rationing, and where the children produced atmospheric Blitz paintings and detailed soldier pencil sketches, showing great respect for the past.
Our work in Mathematics has centred on Shape, Position and Direction. This unit was brought to life through spirited games of Battleships, which allowed the children to master coordinates in an engaging environment. We also celebrated our recent Inter-school Maths Challenge, where students showcased their tenacity and logic through complex problem-solving and puzzles. We bridged the gap between ICT and Geometry by exploring Digital Art, linking technical skills with the mathematical concepts of reflection and symmetry.
It has been an equally active term outside the classroom. The Year 6 students have participated in numerous sporting and swimming events, demonstrating excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. We also enjoyed an incredible Music Day, which was filled with the vibrant sounds of various instruments and song, further highlighting the diverse talents of our students.
Finally, next week marks the culmination of weeks of dedicated rehearsals for our end-of-term production. From mastering complex lines and stage directions to perfecting choreography and vocal projection, the students have poured their hearts into every detail. We are incredibly proud of their progress and can’t wait for you to join us for their performance of a lifetime. We look forward to seeing you all at our spectacular production of ‘Ye-Ha!’ on Tuesday 17th March!
