Year 6 Adventure at Sagana – A Week in the Great Outdoors!

6th June 2025

From the 19th to the 23rd of May, Year 6 embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Sagana, spending the week immersed in nature with Savage Wilderness. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, the children took part in a wide range of thrilling water activities on the Sagana River and nearby dam — including duckies, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and even white-water rafting!

The excitement didn’t stop there. On land, the children challenged themselves with rock climbing, tested their balance on the low-ropes course, and flew across the raging river on the zip-line.

Each morning and evening brought the additional challenge of room inspections. With tidy beds, clean floors, and creative organisation, the competition was fierce — but it was Zahra and Mercy who led their team to victory with their impeccably kept room. Well done, girls!

We ate well, slept soundly, and gave it our all in every activity, working together as a team. It was a fantastic, action-packed week that will be remembered for a long time to come!

Joone:

Last week, I went to Sagana by bus. First, we were in Nairobi and took the SGR from Mombasa to Nairobi. Then it was a 2-hour drive from Nairobi to Sagana. We stayed at Sagana Savage Wilderness. It was such an amazing time there!

We had so much fun playing football and footgolf. I really liked crossing the bridge — but it was so rocky. I like reading books. One day we played UNO No Mercy at noon. Alvin was winning all the time because he’s a legendary UNO player.

I liked SUP and it was great at the dam. I also enjoyed kayaking, archery, and low ropes. The low ropes were so fun! I tried the 5th obstacle and beat Dev on it. I put my feet in, but they got tangled and I fell — but I was okay. I liked archery too, even though we lost.

At night, the fireflies shone. I loved white-water rafting — it was so fun! My three partners were Chris, Alvin, and Dev. Chris almost fell out of the boat because he didn’t duck when sir told him to — but then he ducked just in time. During rafting, I got so much water on my face and I wasn’t okay, but I climbed back onto the boat. I saw a waterfall from that place. Then Mr Wilson pushed me and Dev out of the boat as a surprise!

I liked rock climbing and zip-lining — they’re such fun things to do! I also loved the duckies because it was so amazing, and my partner was Alvin. At one point, we got stuck in the biggest, most massive rapids. Alvin told me to throw my paddle away — and I did it! Chris and Dev almost died because their ducky was going sideways and capsized. I feel sorry for you, Chris and Dev — if you're reading this, you’re so lucky you survived that rapid! I was like a chill guy in the duckies… then at some point, I paddled.

The food was so awesome there — especially the sausages! They were so delicious. And the pancakes, hot chocolate, bread, rice, chapati, and chicken curry — that was my favourite food.

At 5, we were in the pool playing water polo. In our room inspection, our final points were just 2 behind!

We went to the airport and took a photo of us coming back to Mombasa! Later on, we had to put our luggage through the luggage machine. In the lobby, we were playing UNO No Mercy — me, Chris, and Miss Russell. We were playing, and I won! How?

Our plane was supposed to fly at 1:50 PM, but at 2:00 PM we were finally on board. We landed in Mombasa safely.

Sagana was the best trip in Primary! I would rate it 1,000,000/10!

Alvin:

Last week, we went to Sagana and stayed at Savage Wilderness. It was an amazing time! We had so much fun playing football and footgolf. I loved crossing the bridge—it was always so rocky, especially at the end where we could run because there was solid ground beneath us.

At night, we could see fireflies, which was magical. I especially loved the white water rafting. It was so fun, especially the end part where there were so many big rapids, and we even saw a waterfall! I also really enjoyed the duckies. My friend Joone and I were together, and we got stuck in this massive rapid where the guide had to use a safety rope to save us. But it was actually really fun!

The food was amazing, especially the sausages—they were incredible. I also loved rock climbing up the huge wall. It felt so cool and exciting. Overall, I would rate the whole experience 1000/10. I think everyone should experience it!

Dev:

This week, we went to Sagana and stayed at Savage Wilderness. My favourite part was white-water rafting, which I did with Alvin, Chris, and Joone. It was really fun!

I also liked rock climbing — I reached the top every time, which made me proud.

The boys lost the room inspection by just 2 points!

The food was very good, especially the sausages — they were so tasty they disappeared quickly!

On the day we went in the duckies, the guide let us jump into the river, which was a fun surprise.

Something interesting that happened was when Chris and I tipped our ducky over after hitting a big rock near a waterfall.

At night, we could see shiny fireflies lighting up the night sky. It was beautiful to watch them buzz around.

Every night we would say, “Put your torches away, we need to look for fireflies!”

I had a great time. Sagana was the best trip I’ve had in Primary — 10/10!

Chris

Last week we went to Sagana and stayed at Savage Wilderness. It was probably the best trip I’ve ever been on in my primary school life, even though it took like 8 hours to get there — that’s why we had to wake up so early! But when we got there, everything was really nice. The food was sooooo good! The sausages, yoghurt, hot chocolate… but my favourite was the CUSTARD. It was so smudgy and tasty!

But that wasn’t it. The rooms were cosy — although small, they had enough space. We had a full-on pitch just outside our room where we could play anything we wanted. Of course, we played football with my ball… although I guess it was more like golf with our feet!

We also had a pool just a minute away, where we played WrestleMania — I mean, water polo. Definitely water polo.

My favourite part of the trip was the white-water rafting. The rapids caught me off guard way too many times! It’s funny how I was terrified of dipping my toes into the warm dam water, but I could jump into the freezing cold river.

But probably the most memorable part of the trip was Joone’s iconic phrase:
“CALL THE POLICEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!”
when he was climbing up the towering rock wall.
I am sooo sorry if you're reading this, Joone — it was just so funny!

The only scary moment was when Dev and I nearly died in the duckies. We got stuck in this rift kind of rapid, it made us capsize, and we were stuck under for at least 30 seconds!

But this trip was a really delightful experience, and I wish I could go again.

Zahra:

Sagana was very fun! Rafting was the most fun of all, then rock climbing and stand-up paddleboarding. Duckies was a bit too slow, and the rope course was a bit boring because we had to help each other. In the end, Mercy and I could do the whole thing by ourselves.

The food was good, and the hot chocolate was amazing! In Sagana, we had room inspections in the morning and at night. Mercy and I won, and the boys bragged to try and get more points. We stayed at Savage Wilderness.

Mercy:

Sagana was incredible—I’ve never had that much fun! Out of all the activities, white water rafting was by far the most exciting. Everything we did was fun and thrilling, but being in the raft with cold water splashing in our faces was an unforgettable experience. At one point, our guide told us we could jump into the river with our life jackets and float along with the current. What he didn’t mention was that we should keep our mouths closed! Suddenly, I was in the middle of a rapid with water rushing into my mouth. It was wild! After we got out of the river, I had the best shower of my life—right after having the best time of my life.
