Year 5 News

7th February 2026

Science in Year 5 covers many disciplines as well as a wide range of knowledge that requires understanding. Moreover, part of the science topic will involve designing, carrying out and explaining the results of an investigation. Our unit of work this half term has been on Forces and Magnets. We have spoken about what a force is and how to recognise the effects of a force. Year 5 have been able to accurately state what happens to objects when a force is acted upon them and state how forces can be either helpful or unhelpful – depending on the desired outcome. As a result of this, we designed a Friction experiment, focusing on the helpful effect of friction (creating “grip” on the sole of a shoe). The class used Newton meters to carry out the investigation, recorded the results and then presented the information in a bar chart. The final part of the investigation involved writing a conclusion stating why specific shoes required more grip than others.
