Year 1 News

7th February 2025

The dinosaur experts in year 1 have had a busy few weeks so far this term. They have not only used pasta to create dinosaur skeletons, but also used crayons and paint to make ‘resist’ paintings of dinosaur remains. These young paleontologists followed a recipe for salt dough to make their own and then used dinosaur imprints to create fossils. They even got their binoculars out to spot dinosaurs during our Jurassic yoga sessions.

Their observation skills have helped the Year 1s to make close observations during Science lessons. They planted seeds and kept a close eye on the ones that germinated. Unfortunately the dinosaur experts won’t become bean farmers anytime soon. They did, however, have more luck with lentil seeds.

During Maths lessons, the Year 1s are learning to double numbers and to add numbers to 20.

After reading the book ‘We’re going on bear hunt’, the children found tall grass, mud, a river, forest and a cave on the school grounds and went on a bear hunt. This inspired them to write their own stories of other types of hunts.
