Year 1 News

24th May 2025

In history lessons this half term, the children in Year 1 have been focusing on significant people from the very distant and near past. They learned all about the influence the artist Pablo Picasso had on art and made beautiful self-portraits in the cubist style. The first Nobel Peace Prize winner we studied, was Nelson Mandela. Pop in to Year 1 if you would like to see the shirts we designed in the style of his iconic patterned shirts. We also learned about Florence Nightingale and Mother Teresa and the incredible impact they made on the world around them, especially people in need.

In Science, the Year 1 children have focused their attention on animal groups and the classification of animals according to their physical characteristics. This work followed on from the trip we had to Mamba Village earlier this year to study crocodiles in and out of water.

In Maths we have focused our learning on finding halves and quarters of shapes and quantities. We love the practical aspect of finding fractions of cubes and other objects around us.

If you would like to know anything about fairytales, then look no further. Year 1s have become experts of the magical world of fairytale characters and settings. We wrote letters to the woodcutter from Little Red Riding Hood and know that princes and princesses don’t always live happily ever after – there isn’t always a fairy godmother around to wave her wand.
