Year 1 News

13th September 2024

Year 1 has had a great start to the year with, most recently, a small green spaceman crashlanding his rocket in the school grounds and needing to be rescued. The only way to get this spaceman, called Zorg, back to his planet, is to count back from 10 to 0 so that we can help him lift off! He is on the loose in Mombasa at the moment looking for spare parts for his rocket, so if you see a small green man wearing fabulous purple trousers, please tell him the Year 1 children are all recycling plastic containers and cardboard boxes in the hopes of fixing his rocket for him.

Speaking of strange creatures: during art we used our names to create symmetry monsters. You could try this at home by writing your name on a line and reflecting it as a mirror image – then colour and add eyes.

We have also had a wonderful time bringing our favourite toys from home to share during our topic lessons and were lucky enough to meet Aania’s mum’s favourite cuddly duck from when she was a little girl. We sorted toys into old and new and are discovering what toys used to be made of when our grandparents were little.

In science we are learning about the seasons – a very strange concept when you are growing up in the tropics – and about what happens to trees in Autumn.

We are looking forward to the rest of our first term in Key Stage I.
