We began the term with great enthusiasm and have packed so much learning and fun into these weeks. Our day trip to Vipingo Ridge was a highlight — pupils observed animals in their habitats, explored the local physical features and enjoyed a memorable close encounter with giraffes. Excitement is building for our upcoming residential at Turtle Bay, Watamu, where students are eager for turtle hatching, a forest walk and pool activities.
In English, pupils wrote explanations, instructions, haikus and fantasy stories, and they loved following and writing recipes during DT lessons. Daily afternoon registration reading has significantly improved fluency and confidence; reading is now our favourite leisure activity in class.
In Science, we explored -Electricity with great enthusiasm. They enjoyed making simple circuits and carrying out experiments to investigate insulators and conductors. Pupils also sorted appliances that use mains electricity and batteries. As a final activity, they worked in groups to solve practical challenges, such as designing a circuit to light up a dining hall. They made predictions about the materials and type of circuit needed and successfully built and tested different circuits, demonstrating strong teamwork and problem-solving skills.
In History we explored the Ancient Egyptians: children learned about Egyptian culture and created pyramids, mummies and pharaoh masks through drawing, designing, painting and model-making.
Our World Views lessons on pilgrimage in Christianity and Islam sparked rich discussion — pupils shared thoughtful insights about where pilgrims go, what happens on pilgrimage and why it matters, supported by videos.
In Maths we focused on length, perimeter and fractions; it has been wonderful to see pupils grasp concepts, support one another and take turns teaching at the board.
In PSHE pupils learned personal safety, including the three-touch rule (safe, unsafe and unwanted), steps to take if they experience unsafe or unwanted touches, and whom to tell — a vital lifelong skill. Year 4 continues to be a place where children feel loved, respected and free to share. I am very proud of their curiosity, kindness and teamwork. Looking forward to more learning and adventures next term.
Warmly,
Year 4 Class teacher,
Ms Mwaka
