Visit to Close-the-gap Mombasa

10th May 2025

Our Braeburn Mombasa International School prefect body made up of Dev, Alvin, Aaryan, Hafsa, Nicole, Maya, Poul, Aiman and myself had the incredible chance to visit Close the Gap in Ratna Square on 5th May 2025. We enjoyed a really enlightening and motivating day full of conversations about teamwork and leadership, led by Ms Sennik and Ms Simon.

We began the day with a warm greeting from Ms Debbie, who explained the core principles of Close the Gap. She discussed their initiatives and how they are using technology to empower communities by "bridging the digital divide".

After that, we met Ms Francesca, who gave us an interesting insight on teamwork and leadership. "You cannot lead others if you cannot lead yourself," she said, and that truly stuck with me because it is a really strong reminder that you need to prioritise self growth and taking responsibility and accountability for your own actions.

After that, we came together with the prefects and were given a very interesting assignment by Ms Simons and Ms Sennik. The objective? To increase student-led projects in school and provide more chances for everyone to step into leadership roles. We developed the innovative idea of selecting student representatives for various departments within the school as well as thinking of various ways to further motivate students. There was even a fantastic suggestion that student representatives plan various events similarly to how we planned the Career Evening on March 19th. All the conversations were incredibly engaging, and it was wonderful to discuss and be able to organise something that would have a significant impact on our BMIS community.

We then concluded with a lovely lunch before returning to school at 1:00 PM. Thank you very much to Mme Mwangi, Mr Welch, Ms Simon, and Ms Sennik for providing us with such a wonderful opportunity. In addition to being motivating, this tour offered us new insight into how we might strengthen the student body and inspire our peers. We can't wait to develop these concepts and see what we can do as a team!
