Last weekend saw us make an early start and a fantastic trip to Nairobi where our U11 boys took on the might of the IAPS in football. As a group we set off on the train. I think a group of boys could not have been more excited and I am sure they set new records for the amount they chatted and joked during the journey. We arrived at Brookhouse, who had kindly given us boarding for the night, and prepared ourselves with some light training and a team meeting.
Despite having a very tough group (with three of the ‘favourites’ in the group), our boys quickly got into the swing of things. We played very well for large periods of these games, with moments of high quality separating us from them. In the next game we peppered the Peponi goal, hitting the post and having so many shots that their goalkeeper was named man of the match for his countless saves. The group worked extremely hard again in our final game, but were undone again, with some excellent finishing.
Overall the level of performances from the boys was very good; they worked very well as a team and impressed everyone with their courage, manners and endeavour. We had some moments of brilliance: Vyan’s free kicks that whizzed in and hit the bar or the roof of the net, Dev and Rens’ stalwart defending, Chris’ leaps and saves and Alvin’s relentless engine in the midfield, creating chances and supporting Ayden as he held the ball up and took on defenders, making the goalkeepers make a string of saves.
Staff from the boarding and the event all commented on our boys and their strengths. They shone in many ways and I am very pleased and proud to have taken them for the event.
