During Student Council discussions, this initiative began with the idea of a high school debate. New additions to the debate, like making it an inter-house event and having it in the categories KS3 and KS4/KS5, were brought up by student representatives. The idea started to evolve. Feedback from secondary students through their class representatives played an important role because it highlighted how much students wanted a debate that fit within the school’s timing, while still allowing everyone to participate meaningfully. This feedback helped guide the structure of the competition so that it respected time limits and still reflected students’ preferences for an engaging debating experience.
When I relayed the feedback and idea about a possible debate through a debate proposal, debate scoresheet and expertly crafted debate motions (made by our Sixth Form debater, Tasneem) to Madam Mwangi, she approved of it and asked if we could place it at the end of term. This idea was exciting because it meant we could have an inter-house debate in the very near future.
Madam Mwangi confirmed that the inter-house debate will take place on the last Tuesday of the term and this information catalysed the collaboration in Sixth Form between Tasneem, Poul, and I to finalise how the debate would look like. We have created posters on the debate rounds, debate tips, and debate rules to relay to our fellow schoolmates in secondary school for a successful inter-house debate in a week’s time. The stage is set for what promises to be a memorable inter-house debate.
