The Banda IAPS U9 Rugby Festival

20th June 2022

I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to travel to Nairobi and take a small group of boys to play in the Banda U9 rugby festival. We played as part of a team labelled the ‘Mombasa Barbarians’ - this meaning that they are made up from a group of pupils from different schools. The trip was very much a fun affair, with all of the boys enjoying the experience. Each shone in different ways, with Alexander making good movements behind the breakdowns and passing the ball accurately, Sean making some excellent tackles and running bravely into good areas, Vyan showing excellent vision and movement with the ball and Jayden, who captained the Barbarians, making very good runs with the ball and scoring several tries during the five games. The boys took a short time to introduce themselves to the tournament but settled in and were very unfortunate to lose out by only one try on three occasions. The general feeling of those present was that they played very well and deserve a great deal of credit.

It would be fantastic to take a full team next year, perhaps playing a few warm up games prior to the festival.

Well done boys - a truly amazing experience for us all!

Mama Jayden made the trip to watch and added the following: *

‘This past Thursday 16 June 2022, Braeburn Mombasa Rugby team U9 participated in the Banda School Sports Festival. Despite only having four students who travelled for this fixture, we were able to form a complete team by incorporating students from Banda school. Our team name was ‘Barbarians’. I am very proud of the boys who were able to gel with their new team mates and put up a spirited game all through the four matches.

We made tries by Jayden and set ups by both Sean and Vyan. Going forward I propose to grow the team in Mombasa and include scheduled weekly training to build on their skills and confidence in the game in preparation for next season. All in all, this was very well done and a huge congratulations to the Braeburn Mombasa team.’
