Secondary Science News

28th February 2025

Welcome to our Science Department Newsletter, where we share the latest exciting developments in our school's science activities. At school, our students are deeply engaged in various academic and practical exercises designed to build their knowledge and skills as they progress through the curriculum.

In Year 13, our students are fully immersed in mastering the syllabus through rigorous practice and comprehensive coverage. They are refining their understanding of essential topics across Chemistry and Physics. In Chemistry, the focus has been on organic synthesis, electrochemistry, transition elements, and thermodynamics while physics classes have concentrated on fields and forces, quantum physics, and thermal physics. These in-depth sessions are aimed at building strong analytical abilities and preparing students thoroughly for their final examinations.

Our Year 12 students have been sharpening their practical skills in the laboratory, ensuring they gain hands-on experience crucial for their A-Level coursework and practical assessments. Their recent laboratory sessions have provided valuable exposure to various scientific techniques. In Chemistry, they have engaged in volumetric analysis, studied reaction rates, and performed qualitative analyses of ions. The Biology curriculum has involved detailed microscope work, enzyme experiments, and ecological studies, while Physics classes have included investigations into kinematics, electrical circuits, and the analysis of experimental uncertainty. These practical exercises not only reinforce theoretical knowledge but also build the confidence needed to handle complex experimental setups.

Meanwhile, the Year 11 cohort is focusing on consolidating their IGCSE syllabus knowledge through targeted practice sessions. In Chemistry, they are exploring concepts in organic chemistry, chemical energetics, and the chemistry of the environment. Biology lessons are centered around human physiology, inheritance, and the classification of organisms, while Physics classes have been about the principles of electricity and magnetism, the properties of waves, and motion. The combination of comprehensive syllabus practice and exam-oriented preparation is equipping our Year 11 students with the skills they need to excel in their upcoming examinations.

Looking ahead, we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming KS3 Science Showcase next term, where students will present their research, experiments, and projects to the entire school community. We are incredibly proud of the dedication and enthusiasm our students demonstrate every day in their pursuit of scientific excellence.
