Secondary MFL - Where Languages Meet Culture

5th December 2025

After working diligently this term to master the past tense in Year 7 and the past continuous tense in Year 8, our French students extended their learning beyond the classroom by inviting their peers who study Kiswahili to take part in a joint cooking session. This meaningful collaboration allowed students to deepen their cultural awareness and linguistic confidence as they learned the recipes in both French and Kiswahili, comparing vocabulary, instructions and cultural food traditions.

They prepared viazi karai, a well-loved Swahili snack, and les crêpes, the French version of pancakes. The room was filled with excitement, curiosity and teamwork as students worked in mixed-language groups, supporting each other at every step of the process. I was particularly impressed by the spirit of cooperation and peer teaching. Rens demonstrated strong leadership while mixing the ingredients, patiently and clearly guiding his peers.

This practical, hands-on experience beautifully demonstrated how languages connect people and how learning goes beyond textbooks and into real life.
Well done to all our students for your enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication throughout the term!
