Secondary Inter-House Debate Competition - a student-led initiative

6th December 2025

On Tuesday, 2nd December, Braeburn Mombasa International School held its very first Secondary Inter-House Debate Competition, bringing together enthusiastic debaters from Chui, Kifaru, and Simba. The event was a vibrant celebration of student voice, confidence, and critical thinking, and every participant demonstrated impressive preparation and passion.

For many students, this was their first-ever debating experience, yet they rose to the occasion with courage and determination. Despite initial nerves, each student stepped up, tried their best, and showed clear improvement as the rounds progressed. It was inspiring to watch participants learn from their peers, strengthen their teamwork, and grow in confidence with every speech.

The competition featured two categories:

  • KS3 Category – where our younger debaters showcased emerging talent, lively engagement, and a growing mastery of persuasive speaking.

  • KS4 & KS5 Category – where our senior students presented thoughtful, well-structured arguments and handled complex topics with maturity.

Students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout, making the debates engaging and enjoyable for everyone involved. The standard across both categories was exceptionally high, and all three houses should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Final Results:

After all scores were calculated from both categories, the overall house rankings were as follows:

  1. CHUI – 93.9 points
  2. SIMBA – 87.8 points
  3. KIFARU – 82.6 points

The results reflect how competitive the event was and how well-prepared each house came to the debates.

A special thank-you goes to our adjudicators, whose expertise and fairness ensured that each debate was judged thoughtfully and consistently. We would also like to recognise Madame Mwangi and Ms Simon, whose support throughout the event played a significant role in helping the day run smoothly.

Finally, a heartfelt acknowledgement to Christy, our Head of the Student Representatives, who first proposed the idea for this inter-house debate as well as organised it. Without her initiative and vision, this entire event would not have been possible.
