Science Department Update: Biology and Chemistry

7th November 2025

It has been a busy and productive start to the term in the Science Department. Both Year 12 and Year 13 students have shown real commitment in Biology and Chemistry, building on what they learned last year and taking on more advanced ideas with focus and enthusiasm.

Chemistry

In Chemistry, students have been working through topics in Physical Chemistry. Year 12 has covered areas such as energy changes, reaction rates, and equilibrium, learning how reactions behave under different conditions and how these ideas apply in real situations.

Year 13 has gone a step further into A-Level Physical Chemistry, looking closely at thermodynamics and electrochemistry. These lessons have helped students think about how energy is transferred and used in chemical systems and how to interpret the data that comes from experiments.

At IGCSE level, students have been studying corrosion and rusting, as well as parts of air and water chemistry. Through experiments and discussion, they have learned how and why metals rust, what affects air quality, and how water can be made safe for use.

Biology

In Biology, our A-Level students have focused on physiology topics such as respiration, homeostasis, and coordination. They have explored how the body maintains balance and responds to changes in the environment. Lessons have included practical work and case examples that show how different systems in the body depend on one another.

The study of coordination has been especially engaging, helping students understand how the nervous and hormonal systems work together. There have been many thoughtful class discussions that show growing confidence in applying biological ideas.

Looking Ahead

As the term continues, students will keep developing their practical and analytical skills while preparing for the upcoming mock examinations. The aim is to connect what they learn in theory with what they see in experiments and to help them approach their final studies with greater understanding and independence.

We are pleased with the steady progress so far and look forward to seeing more growth and curiosity as the year continues.
