Safer Internet Day 2025: Too Good to Be True?

7th February 2025

On Tuesday, 11th February 2025, schools across the world will join the global celebration of Safer Internet Day, an annual event dedicated to promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology. This year’s theme, "Too Good to Be True? Protecting Yourself and Others from Scams Online," highlights the importance of critical thinking when navigating the digital world.

Spotting the Signs of Online Scams

With the increasing use of the internet for communication, shopping, and social networking, online scams are becoming more sophisticated. Fraudulent emails, fake competitions, and misleading advertisements can trick even the most tech-savvy users. Here are some red flags to watch out for:

  • Unbelievable Offers – If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Urgency and Pressure – Scammers often create a sense of urgency to rush you into making a decision.
  • Suspicious Links and Emails – Be cautious of messages asking for personal information or directing you to unknown websites.
  • Requests for Money or Personal Details – Legitimate organisations will never ask for sensitive information over email or social media.

How to Stay Safe Online

Educating ourselves and others is key to avoiding online scams. Here are some practical tips to stay safe:

  • Think Before You Click – Always verify links before clicking, especially if they come from unknown sources.
  • Use Strong Passwords – Protect your accounts with complex passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
  • Report Suspicious Activity – If you receive a suspicious message, report it to the relevant platform or an adult.
  • Talk About It – Encourage open discussions with family, friends, and teachers about online safety.

Get Involved!

At BMIS, we will be marking Safer Internet Day 2025 with engaging and interactive lessons, discussions on digital responsibility, and an assembly on recognising and preventing online scams. We encourage students, parents, and staff to take part and share their knowledge to create a safer online community.

The internet is a powerful tool for learning and communication, but it is essential to stay vigilant. Let us work together to ensure that the digital world is a safer place for everyone!
