Art has kicked off the year with great enthusiasm across the Primary School! This term, our pupils have had numerous opportunities to explore their creativity and showcase their artistic potential both inside and outside the classroom.
Outside class, our young artists took part in the COBIS Art Competition, creating impressive pieces under the theme “Through Another’s Eyes.” They enjoyed interpreting this thought-provoking theme, expressing empathy and imagination through their artwork. Pupils also participated in The Big Draw Day, exploring the theme “Drawing with Your Senses.” It was truly inspiring to see the creativity and originality that emerged as children interpreted the world through sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
In class, each year group has embarked on exciting art projects:
- Year 1 explored textures by using crayons to make rubbings of different surfaces around the classroom and school. They also experimented with primary and secondary colours, discovering how new hues are created through mixing. Their combined texture rubbings and colour experiments resulted in imaginative collages that celebrated their growth as confident young artists.
- Year 2 have been exploring lines and space to create beautiful abstract pieces. Inspired by the COBIS theme, they learned to appreciate art from different perspectives—seeing the world “through another’s eyes.” They have also been developing still-life drawing skills and learning about shading, using light and dark tones to add depth and form to their artwork.
- Year 4 delved into perspective and the concept of the horizon line. They created detailed observational drawings and, in Design and Technology, worked collaboratively to construct models of the Lunatic Express using cardboard—a project they absolutely loved!
- Year 5 combined poetry and art by transforming their daffodil-inspired poems into expressive pieces depicting clouds and rivers, blending words and visuals beautifully.
- Year 6 drew inspiration from the artist Alma Woodsey Thomas, creating vibrant, patterned works that reflected her unique abstract style.
It has been a wonderfully creative and inspiring term. We look forward to seeing even more artistic brilliance in Term 2!
