Pitch Exploration with Boom Whackers in FS2

24th January 2025

Our FS2 class had an exciting week as they explored the concept of pitch using boom whackers! These brightly coloured percussion tubes are perfect for introducing young learners to musical sounds in a fun and engaging way.

The children discovered that pitch is the highness or lowness of a sound. By striking the boom whackers on different surfaces, they produced different notes. They were thrilled to learn that the longer boom whackers create lower pitches, while the shorter ones make higher pitches. This hands-on activity helped the children develop their listening skills as they compared and identified the sounds.

To make the lesson even more exciting, the children played simple tunes by following colour-coded patterns. This was a wonderful way to combine music and teamwork, as they worked together to create melodies.

Through this activity, our FS2 learners not only had fun but also took their first steps in understanding the basics of music. We look forward to seeing how their musical journey progresses!
