Little Musicians, Big Progress: Primary Students Discover the Joy of Instruments

6th June 2025

There’s a vibrant energy in our Primary music classrooms this term, as students from Year 1 all the way to Year 6 explore instruments, develop new skills, and grow in musical confidence. With glockenspiels, recorders, ukuleles, pianos — and now, band instruments in the mix — it’s been inspiring to see the dedication and excitement from our young musicians.

In Year 1, students are learning the basics of rhythm and pitch through singing and percussion games. They’re experimenting with sounds, building coordination, and learning how music can tell a story. In Years 1 and 2, students have started to work more independently, engaging with the piano. These early experiences are helping build strong musical foundations in pitch, timing, and ensemble awareness.

Meanwhile, students in Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 have been working on band instruments, such as drums, keyboards, bass, and guitar. It’s exciting to see them step into band roles — learning not just how to play their parts, but how to listen to one another, stay in time, and perform as a team. Whether it’s holding down a rhythm on the drums or strumming a steady pattern on the guitar, the effort students are putting into their practice is paying off.

What’s been most impressive is the growth mindset on display. Many students are picking up completely new instruments, making mistakes, learning from them, and improving with each rehearsal. There’s a real sense of pride and teamwork building across classes, and several students have even asked for extra time to practise during break or after school!

Music is quickly becoming a highlight of the week — and it’s wonderful to see how it’s building not just musical ability, but confidence, focus, and collaboration too.

Watch this space — our young performers are finding their sound, and the future of our school bands is looking bright!
