Learning outside the classroom - tolerant and open-minded individuals

30th June 2023

We are thrilled to share an adventure our French and Kiswahili students recently embarked upon. As part of the vertical lessons program, the Year 4, 5, 7 and 8 students visited Bombolulu Workshop and Cultural Centre. Our aim was to appreciate language and enhance our understanding of culture.

Upon arrival, the students were given a tour of the different workshops like textile, jewellery, leather, metal and wood. Teachers encouraged the students to ask questions in the language of the catchment area: Kiswahili. The students' favourite part was the tour around the cultural setup, the gift shop, and watching the traditional dance troupe where they got to join and dance in its climax. The troupe performed 4 dances in total: a greetings dance, a welcome dance (Jambo bwana), a dance called ‘Vunja kebe’ from a coastal tribe called ‘Duruma’ and finally a harvest dance ‘wamakonde’ from a Mozambique tribe called Sindimba.
