Le Malin French Meeting

1st October 2019

On September 20th, the Year 9, KS4 French students and Year 12&13 visited a French ship used by the navy. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the boat and its history, what they do in case of fire and about the control room. In the event of a fire, they wear a suit that resembles one of a firefighter and a gas mask which we got to see. “It was heavy and hot” said Yaro after getting to try on the jacket. In the control room there had to be 2 people at all times.

They gave us insight into what it was like living on the boat, showing us their equipment, gym and recreational room. It was interesting to see the interior and exterior design of the ship. It was also fascinating to see the engineering of the ship. They explained to us where in the world they had been and where they are going. We learnt that the crew consisted of 24 people at all times and the ship can carry up to 35 people.

During their time on the ship, they had confiscated drugs and one caught a boat with 300kg of illegal fish. During the tour, the power went off forcing us to evacuate from inside briefly.

“I found it was an interesting experience. I enjoyed going up and down the narrow staircases” Mariama
