Term Update: A Journey Through Time!

History at Braeburn Mombasa has been nothing short of a thrilling adventure this term! From the grand pyramids of Ancient Egypt to the storming of the Bastille and the seismic shifts of Russian revolutions, our KS3 historians have delved deep into the past to uncover the forces that shaped our world. Let us take a closer look at what each year group has been exploring.

Year 7 – Ancient Egypt: Land of Pharaohs and Pyramids

Year 7 students have embarked on an extraordinary voyage along the Nile, discovering the wonders of Ancient Egypt. One of our students enriched the learning experience by sharing a video she had taken during her visit to Egypt, providing an incredible firsthand perspective that brought history to life. They have explored the mysteries of the pyramids, the power of the pharaohs, and the fascinating process of mummification. Students have also investigated the significance of the Rosetta Stone in unlocking the secrets of hieroglyphics and considered how Ancient Egypt’s legacy continues to influence us today. Through hands-on activities, they have engaged with primary sources and debated the role of different social classes.

Year 8 – The French Revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!

The dramatic upheaval of the French Revolution has been at the heart of Year 8’s studies this term. Students have analysed the causes of this monumental event, from the financial crisis to the discontent of the Third Estate. They have explored key moments such as the storming of the Bastille, the execution of Louis XVI, and the rise of Robespierre. Engaging in lively debates, they have questioned whether the revolution achieved its aims and examined its lasting impact on France and the wider world. The gruesome reality of the guillotine and the radical shift in power have certainly made this unit one of high intrigue!

Year 9 – Russia 1900-1941: Revolutions and the Rise of Stalin

Year 9 students have been immersed in the turbulent history of Russia from the early 20th century through to Stalin’s rule. Beginning with the hardships faced under Tsar Nicholas II, they have dissected the events of the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, the fall of the Romanovs, and the rise of Lenin and the Bolsheviks. The impact of Stalin’s policies—including collectivisation, the Five-Year Plans, and the Great Purge—has sparked intense discussions on power and ideology. This unit has challenged students to think critically about revolution, dictatorship, and the price of progress.

KS4 & KS5 Update

Year 10 – In-Depth Study of Germany

Year 10 students have been exploring Germany in depth, tracing its journey from the Weimar Republic to the rise of the Nazis. They have examined the Treaty of Versailles, the impact of hyperinflation, and the events leading up to Hitler’s consolidation of power. Through the study of key figures, economic challenges, and political shifts, students have developed a detailed understanding of one of the most complex and significant periods in modern history.

Year 11 & Year 12 – Cambridge Examination Preparation

For Year 11 and Year 12 students, the focus has been on revision and examination readiness. With Cambridge examinations fast approaching, they have been refining their source analysis skills, perfecting essay structures, and reviewing key content areas. Teachers have provided intensive revision sessions, past paper practice, and targeted feedback to ensure that students are well-equipped to perform their best. We encourage all students to maintain their revision schedules, seek support where needed, and stay confident as they prepare for their upcoming assessments.

Looking Ahead

As we continue with the term, our young historians will continue to hone their analytical skills, engaging with historical sources, evaluating different perspectives, and making connections between past and present. We encourage students to keep asking questions, challenging assumptions, and exploring history beyond the classroom!

Thank you for your continued support in making history a vibrant and dynamic subject at Braeburn Mombasa. We look forward to another exciting term ahead!
