Kiswahili – Year 7

26th September 2025

This term, our Year 7 students began their Kiswahili journey with great enthusiasm. In the first week, the whole cohort enjoyed a taster lesson that introduced both French and Kiswahili. After this, students selected their preferred language, and our Kiswahili group has since been diving into the beauty and richness of Swahili.

We started by exploring the Swahili alphabet, building a strong foundation in pronunciation and letter recognition. From there, we moved into exciting topics such as the family tree and parts of speech, which have helped students grow both their vocabulary and grammatical understanding.

Alongside language skills, students have also learned about the background of Kiswahili –including how Arab traders arrived on the East African coast, influencing the language and culture. This rich history explains why Kiswahili has many borrowed words from Arabic, making it a fascinating language to study.

It has been a wonderful start, and our Year 7 students are already showing curiosity and enthusiasm as they develop both their language skills and cultural awareness.
