6th December 2024
On Thursday, 5th Dec ,2024 during period 6, students in Key stage 3 had a STEM challenge.
Task: To construct the strongest bridge using A4 papers and tape.
Materials provided: A4 papers (45 pieces each group), tape, scissors, 50cm ruler, Information on types of bridges.
Time: 45 minutes
How it was tested:
We used 100 gram masses to test the strength of each bridge. We put the bridge between two tables (pillars) and added masses to the center. The one that carried the most mass and was still strong (not bent), won.
Results:
The results and the mass supported by each bridge before starting to break/bend were:
1) Simba 1 (Alba, Aleena, Ricky, Sean) supported 5.7kg and was still strong.
2) Simba 2 (Samuel, Rens, Yidan, Lloyd) supported 5.7kg but bent a bit.
3) Chui 1 (Hafsa, Natalie, Alice) supported 5kg mass.
4) Chui 2 (Aaryan, Pamela, Jacey) supported 2.5kg mass.
5) There was a tie between Kifaru 1 and Kifaru 2 (both bridges supported 200 grams mass)
