This term, the Inclusion Department has been implementing the Word Wasp Programme to support students in developing stronger skills in spelling, reading, and pronunciation. The programme uses a structured and systematic approach to help learners understand how words are built and how sounds connect to spelling patterns.
Word Wasp works by breaking words into smaller, manageable parts. Students are taught to recognise patterns within words, such as common letter combinations and sound structures. Through guided practice, they learn to segment words (break them apart) and blend sounds together to read and pronounce them accurately.
The programme follows a carefully sequenced progression. Students begin with simpler patterns and gradually move towards more complex spelling structures. Each session includes repetition and review, allowing learners to practise patterns multiple times until they become familiar and automatic. This structured approach is particularly beneficial for students who need additional support with literacy, as it helps reinforce learning through consistent practice.
During intervention sessions, students participate in short, focused activities where they read words aloud, practise spelling patterns, and apply what they have learned to new words. This helps them build confidence in decoding unfamiliar words and improves their reading fluency and spelling accuracy over time.
By strengthening these foundational literacy skills, the programme helps students access the wider curriculum more confidently and supports their overall language development.
We are pleased to see students engaging positively with the programme and look forward to continuing this work in the coming term as we support every learner in building strong literacy foundations. `
