Humanities News - Respect and Tolerance

1st November 2021

BMIS recently celebrated its annual Respect Day.

As always, the staff and students promoted the essential values of tolerance and acceptance of each other, of different beliefs and of different cultures.

I was shocked a few days later, as was the British parliament and the British people, by a diabolical and cruel attack on a member of parliament, Sir David Amess. He was stabbed to death at a local constituency meeting

What was revealed very shortly after his death, was the huge regard that all politicians of all parties had for him.

So politicians can be friends. As I heard the former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown say, ‘You can disagree without being disagreeable.’

I am tempted to add, if they can do it, then so can the rest of us.

So I am sure that our students will continue to debate and argue about all kinds of things, which is a very good thing. I am equally confident that they will continue to listen to and respect the views of each other.
