FS2 News

7th February 2026

The FS2 children have had a wonderful learning experience. The children have greatly enjoyed the Topic, ‘Transport’, taken part in a special themed day, ‘Penguin Awareness Day’, listened to different stories in the Drawing Club, learned new sounds, and enjoyed Story Yoga and child lead activities in the classroom and outdoors.

Topic Work – Transport

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the topic ‘Transport’. They learned about different modes of transport and where various vehicles travel. They engaged in small-world play using the train and road sets, constructed roads and garages for different vehicles, and even made their own boats. Their curiosity and creativity have been a joy to watch.

Literacy and Drawing Club

Each morning, the children begin with self-registration and writing their names. Most children can now write their names from memory, while some are still developing this skill. In Phonics, we have begun learning digraphs and started guided reading. The children have enjoyed sharing their books with family members and practicing their early reading skills. In the drawing club , the children have listened to the stories, ‘What’s in the witch’s kitchen’, ‘The Hairy Toe’, ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ and ‘The gingerbread man’. Through the drawing club, the children have been learning new vocabulary, drawing pictures of characters, setting and using their imagination to answer l wonder questions. Drawing club is also helping the children talk confidently while developing new vocabulary, mark making skills and mathematics through counting, comparing, number writing and developing number sense.

Mathematics

In Maths, the children continue to explore the Five Frame. They self-register using the Five Frame each morning when they arrive and again each afternoon before going home. This daily routine supports their understanding of numbers, helping them develop number sense and confidently recognise “how many” children are present in school each day. Children are also developing mathematics skills and number sense through drawing club, outdoor child lead play and teacher lead activities.

Understanding the World (PSED)

In PSED, we have been learning about healthy eating and ways to keep our bodies healthy. The children can now talk about foods that are healthy and those that are less healthy. They have also been discussing different habits and choices that help us stay healthy.

Penguin Awareness Day

The children enjoyed a special Penguin Awareness Day at school. They came dressed in black and white and began the day by listening to a penguin story and dancing to penguin songs.
They learned a variety of facts about penguins—where they live, what they eat, the different types of penguins, how they move, and what their bodies are covered with. The children then created their own penguins and wrote words to represent the facts they had learned.

Outdoor and Child-Initiated Learning

Outdoors, the children have enjoyed a wide range of play experiences. They have been cooking pretend meals and baking in the mud kitchen, exploring water and sand, and making different creations with the sand. They have loved digging, moulding, and sieving the sand to find hidden pretend treasure.
The children also enjoyed mark-making with chalk, coloured pencils, and paint in the outdoor art area.

Here are some photos of our learning experiences!
