24th May 2025

This half term, FS1 children have enjoyed a wide range of exciting and enriching learning experiences. They have explored the Topic Countries and ultures, made progress in early literacy and mathematics, and thoroughly enjoyed outdoor and child-initiated learning.

Topic Work and Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED)-Countries and Cultures

  • The children learned about the countries they come from and discovered special facts about each country. They enjoyed creating flags to represent the diverse cultures in our class. Highlights included: Kenya – Making traditional Maasai paper necklaces, Uganda – Crafting gorillas, a national symbol, Latvia – Creating the two-spotted ladybird, Latvia’s national insect, Taiwan – Making models of electric scooters, a popular mode of transport, Canada – Designing colorful autumn trees using maple leaf templates.

The children showed great enthusiasm and pride in learning about their cultural backgrounds and looked forward to each new activity with excitement.

Literacy

  • The children have made significant progress in recognising their names in print. They are now working on: Tracing their names on name cards, Copying their names independently and Writing their names from memory. It’s been wonderful to see their growing confidence and joy in recognizing and learning to write their names.

Mathematics

  • In Maths, the children have been exploring patterns through hands-on activities using a variety of resources. They created patterns with: Pegs and peg boards, Sticks and ring games, LEGO blocks, guided by repeating pattern cards. The children are developing the ability to predict which colour or shape comes next, showing an understanding of sequencing and early mathematical thinking.

Outdoor and Child-Initiated Learning

  • The children have loved exploring the outdoors. Messy play in muddy puddles has been a highlight, offering rich sensory and tactile experiences. These activities not only fuel their curiosity but also help them learn about the world around them in a joyful and meaningful way.

We’re so proud of all the learning and progress the children have made this half term. Looking forward to the second half of term to see where our learning will take us. Have a great midterm break.
