From First Words to Fluency, The French Journey at BMIS

28th February 2026

At Braeburn Mombasa International School, French is introduced from Year 2 through interactive activities, songs, and picture reading. At this early stage, the focus is on building curiosity, confidence, and a positive attitude towards language learning.

Learning French is a gradual journey. Students begin by naming simple nouns, then move on to verbs and adjectives. They start by constructing short sentences using three- and four-letter words, and gradually develop the ability to express themselves with increasing accuracy and detail.

For example, in Key Stage 1 students learn how to talk about their family in French by simply naming family members. By Year 7, the same topic has developed significantly. Students are able to talk about their families in more depth, how many people there are, what family members do, what they enjoy doing together at the weekends, they can give opinions about different leisure activities including places they visit for family vacations.

Presenting our students for the DELF prim and junior examinations has proven to be extremely beneficial, as it encourages consistent revision. This not only helps students to excel in the DELF examinations, but also supports strong performance in their senior school French classes.

The DELF prim exam will take place on 28th March 2026, and we have a clear revision strategy in place.

From 7:55 to 8:10 each morning, we will run revision support sessions for students who wish to sit the DELF prim exam.

In addition, there will be a lunchtime revision club daily where students can revise with their peers, I will be available for support and supervision.

I request parents to encourage their children to attend these sessions if they intend to take the examination, as this will also allow us to support students for excellence.

Alliance Francaise de Mombasa will be hosting a webinar for parents on the DELF Prim certification, at 10am on Wednesday 4th March.

We are BMIS! We Build Brilliance Together and our Learners Enjoy Success!
