Environmentally aware individuals working collaboratively to raise awareness.

29th April 2023

Braeburn Mombasa students will take part in a Plastic Art Challenge organised by Alliance Francaise de Mombasa. They will work collaboratively to create a piece of art out of plastic waste. Secondary students have started brainstorming ideas and will refine their ideas and select the plastic items they will use next week.

We look forward to observing their process and journey and discover their creative piece before the submission date at the end of May.

Message from Alliance Francaise Mombasa:

As part of the Mombasa Ocean Festival, AF Mombasa, in partnership with the French Embassy in Kenya, Vintz Plastic and Rintz Plastic, invites pupils of Mombasa schools to create works of art from recycled material and to explore how different waste material can be reused.

Mombasa Ocean Festival 2023 will take place from June 3 to June 10 2023.

The MOF seeks to educate the community about threats to our precious marine environment and the ways in which we all can better protect these environments. We all know it is important to reduce waste, but what can we do with rubbish and unused items instead of throwing them away?

AF Mombasa, in partnership with Vintz Plastic and Rintz Plastic, is challenging pupils to create artwork out of recycled material. This is a group contest – the works must be created by three or more students under the supervision of their art teacher. The artwork must relate to the theme of “Ocean” and be made of recycled items. This challenge also provides a great opportunity to start conversations with children and teenagers about sustainability and why it is important to reduce waste. It may feed into existing activities or clubs relating to the environment in your school. For older students, this challenge is an opportunity to think creatively about how to use unusual art materials. The scope of the theme means they can be experimental in what they create and their approach to using recycled items.

The entry will be judged on :

  • Creativity and originality of work
  • Relevance to the challenge topic “Ocean”

Category 1 : Junior School (Year 4 to Year 6) – Maximum 1 entry per school

Category 2 : Senior School (Year 7 to Year 13) – Maximum 2 entries per school

The artwork must be created by a group of more than three students or, ideally, by a whole class.

Members of the jury :

  • Dr Uku, Président of WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association)
  • Mr. Tsofa Michael Mwemi, Head of Region, Coast - Wildlife clubs of Kenya
  • Mr. Simon Mbaro - Director Culture and Youth Affairs, Mombasa County
  • Mrs Bela - Visual artist and photographer - StudioBelaBela
  • M. Muhammed Ramazani - Chairman of Alliance française de Mombasa

The creation from the different schools will be exhibited at AF Mombasa from June 1st to June 17th 2023, during the Mombasa Ocean Festival.

BMIS is proud to support AF Mombasa in their initiative to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans.
