English Department News

23rd May 2025

As the academic year draws to a close, we reflect on the joy of language learning across all year groups. Our students have worked diligently to refine their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills — all crucial tools in mastering English, not only as a subject but as a global means of communication and understanding.

Year 11 (IGCSE):
Our senior-most students have completed their IGCSE English Language and Literature examinations. We wish them good luck and hope that their dedication throughout the year will lead to good performances in the final assessments. We commend their maturity and resilience and wish them the very best as they transition to the next chapter of their academic journeys.

Year 9 and 10:
Year 10 students have continued to strengthen their language skills through the IGCSE English course, through reading, creative writing, and text analysis — all while celebrating the power and joy of the English language.

After completing their Cambridge Checkpoint examinations, Year 9 students took their first steps into the IGCSE syllabus. This term, they began exploring the poetry anthology, delving into thematic analysis, tone and figurative language. Their engagement and growing appreciation for poetic forms have been a promising start to this important two-year course.

Years 7 and 8:
Students in Years 7 and 8 have been steadily building their foundations in reading comprehension, creative and functional writing, grammar, and punctuation. As they prepare for their end-of-year examinations, they are revisiting key concepts and practising skills that will support their success in higher levels of English study.

Why English Skills Matter – A Global Perspective

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to communicate clearly and thoughtfully is more important than ever. Whether it is crafting persuasive arguments, analysing media, or interpreting literary texts, students are developing lifelong skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

English empowers students to:

  • Think critically and express complex ideas
  • Understand diverse cultures through literature
  • Communicate effectively in academic and professional settings
  • Engage meaningfully with global issues through language

We continue to focus on nurturing these skills in our students, ensuring they are equipped to be not just examination-ready, but world-ready.

We look forward to even more inspiring learning experiences next year and remember to read “just one more chapter or book” over the half-term break
