Enchanting Young Minds: Why Fairy Tales Matter in the EYFS

28th February 2026

Once upon a time—or more specifically, on Tell a Fairy Tale Day—we paused to celebrate the stories that have shaped childhoods for generations. While these tales of brave heroes and magical beanstalks are undeniably fun, they are far more than just "filler" for story time.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), fairy tales are powerful engines for development. They provide a safe space for children to explore complex emotions, build a rich "story language" (like "Once upon a time" and "Happily ever after"), and develop their own internal compass for right and wrong.

Creche: The Three Little Pigs 🐷

Our youngest learners had a busy, "huff-and-puff" free week! They worked collaboratively to build three large-scale houses, using different materials and practicing teamwork. The children used pink paints and paper to create their very own pigs to on mud.

FS1: The Little Red Hen 🌾

In FS1, the children explored the importance of helpfulness and hard work through the story of The Little Red Hen. The children enjoyed following up the story with some fun artwork.

FS2: Hansel and Gretel 🍭

FS2 took a trip into the deep, dark woods to follow the trail of Hansel and Gretel. The children made a delicious piece of art: building their very own house of sweets.
