Braeburn Mombasa - Outstanding Performance in the Kenya National Youth Chess Championship

26th April 2024

We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our students at the recent Kenya National Youth Chess Championship. Representing our school with dedication and skill, Ayden, Vyan, Aaryan, and Denis showcased remarkable performances, leaving a lasting impression on the national stage.

A total of 14 students from our school participated in the regional round towards the end of Term 2, with the majority securing a spot in the finals. Subsequently, four of our talented students advanced to the national round held during the Easter holidays in Kiambu. Competing against the finest players in their age categories from across Kenya, they demonstrated exceptional performance, positive attitude, and unwavering resilience throughout the competition.

Denis, competing in the U14 category, achieved a commendable score of 4 points out of 8 matches, reflecting his determination and focus. Vyan and Ayden, both in the U12 category, displayed extraordinary talent, securing 6.5 points each out of 8 matches. Vyan's excellent performance earned him the 29th position out of 786 players, while Ayden secured the 28th position. Aaryan, also competing in the U12 category, delivered an outstanding performance, earning an impressive 7 points out of 8 matches and securing the 4th position overall out of 786 students. Take a look at what one of the playing halls looked like!

These exceptional results not only highlight the individual talent of our students but also underscore the strength of our school's chess program and the support of our community. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to their parents for their unwavering encouragement and support. Additionally, a special thanks to Coach Paul from Mombasa Chess Academy for his guidance and mentorship, which undoubtedly played a pivotal role in our students' success.

As we celebrate these remarkable achievements, we commend our students for their dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to us all, and we look forward to witnessing their continued success on and off the chessboard.

Congratulations once again to Ayden, Vyan, Aaryan, Denis. Your achievements have brought great pride to our school, and we wish you continued success in all your future endeavours.

A few words from Coach Paul:

Chess in schools compliments learning by fostering skills such as patience, strategic thinking, handling victories and defeats, among others. Engaging in chess tournaments not only cultivates these skills but also provides opportunities to apply them in real-world scenarios.

The 2024 Kenya National Youth Chess Championship was a big success, drawing over 5000 players from across the country. It is one of the largest chess events ever held in Kenya and maybe even in all of Africa. This impressive turnout signals a growing interest in chess among schools, recognizing its ability to teach important skills like patience, strategic thinking, and resilience.

Tournaments like this provide valuable opportunities for players to practice these skills in real-life situations.
