Braeburn Mombasa International School Participates in Mombasa Ocean Festival 2024

On Thursday 6th June 2024, Braeburn Mombasa International School students from Year 6, and French students from KS3, as well as future and current IGCSE/BTEC level 2 Art students, participated in the Mombasa Ocean Festival, following an invitation from the Alliance Française de Mombasa. The ocean festival, supported by EUNIC Kenya, KMFRI, and Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, aimed to raise awareness about the impact of human actions on the ocean.

Highlights of the Day

The Mombasa Ocean Festival, held from June 4th to 8th, 2024 had Thursday, June 6th, a day dedicated to schools, students experienced powerful theatre performances:

  • “A Protest of the Mangroves” by Jukwaa Arts Production, emphasising the importance of mangrove conservation.
  • The Little Theatre Club's vibrant performance, “Kati Yetu,” highlighted cultural heritage and environmental challenges.

Students also met renowned photographer Jahawi Bertolli and explored his underwater photography exhibition, “Impressions from the Indian Ocean.”

Additionally, they enjoyed an interactive session with French musician Bernard Abeille, whose ocean-inspired music provided a unique auditory experience.

Educational Enrichment

The festival was an enriching experience, fostering a deeper understanding and commitment to ocean conservation among our students. It was a day filled with discovery, learning and inspiration, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.

BTEC Art Students Showcase at Mombasa Ocean Festival

On Saturday 8th June, Miss Mang’oli and the Year 12 BTEC Art students had the opportunity to showcase their creative pieces at the Mombasa Ocean Festival. Their table featured a stunning array of ocean-themed artwork, demonstrating the students' artistic talent and dedication to environmental themes.

Junior and Senior competition for art schools

Special congratulations to all the Year 6 and high school students who participated in creating the artwork that was entered into the competition for schools. These exceptional pieces were presented during the opening ceremony and beautifully mounted on the wall for the duration of the festival, earning admiration from attendees.

I loved the trip because, the French musician who made animal sounds with his double bass.

The acts…My favourite one was the one where the chief's child was sick.

I really enjoyed the trip to the Alliance Francaise! What I enjoyed most was the movie about how to protect the ocean, there was also an AMAZING double bass who shocked us with all his talent!

I think the acting and the puppet show was brilliant! The plays were the favourite part of the trip! I also loved the sounds of the double bass. The musician imitated the sounds of marine creatures!
