HOLES by Louis Sachar

Stanley Yelnats, the main character, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was caught with a pair of a celebrity’s shoes, so was taken to court. When found guilty, he given the chance of going to Camp Green Lake or Juvenile Prison. He chose Camp Green Lake, which didn’t have a lake and wasn’t green. During his time at Camp Green Lake, he had a difficult time; he had to dig a deep hole every day.

“My favourite part is when Stanley tries to escape Camp Green Lake on the bus which brings them water and the truck falls down into one of the holes!” Leola.

“My favourite part is the flashbacks to Stanley’s great-grandfather’s memories.” Raahil.

“My favourite section to read out loud is when the characters are having difficulty talking because they hadn’t eaten all day!” Tatyana.

BOY by Roald Dahl

This book is about Roald Dahl’s childhood. At the beginning of the book, Dahl describes how his father dislocated his shoulder when he was younger. However, the doctor made a mistake and his father’s arm had to be amputated not long after! Following this, Dahl talks about how his 7-year old sister, Astri, died from appendicitis and soon after that his father was diagnosed with pneumonia. A few weeks later, his father died from the pneumonia! One month after this, his mother gave birth to her fifth child! We have read up to the part where he moves to England and we hope his childhood gets happier as we continue.

“My favourite part is the part where Roald Dahl says that his mother was very brave to not ask for any help after giving birth.” Erin.

“I like how Roald Dahl spoke about how much his father loved his daughter.” Arjan.

“My favourite part is when he’s talking about playing with his sister.” Shay

BUTTERFLY LION by Michael Murporgo

At the start of the book, the main character ran away from school in the rain because he wasn’t enjoying it. This is as much as we have read so far.

“I think he’s going to be expelled by the headteacher and he’s going to meet a lion.” Denis
