On Thursday, Years 5 and 6 went to Bombolulu craft workshop to see artisans at work, linked to our topic about fair trading.
It was fascinating to watch some of the artisans at work, sanding wooden beads for necklaces, or cutting and polishing metal for earrings, as well as the tailors cutting and sewing fabrics and printing textiles for various purposes. The fair pricing and sale of these products allows the artisans to make a living and provide for themselves and their families.
A real highlight of the trip was being in the workshop where they make wheelchairs and hand-powered tricycles for physically disabled people. At 18,000/KES, these are not affordable for everyone who needs one; the children were inspired to think of ways of raising enough money to purchase one of these life-changing vehicles to provide a whole new lifeline for somebody in need. Watch this space for news of fund-raising events later this term.
