Year 1 Maths

23rd February 2024

This week in Maths, we have been focussing on Doubling 1 and 2-digit numbers using a range of strategies, including near-doubles, repeated addition and partitioning.

At this stage in a Year 1 student’s learning journey, it is important to use materials and diagrams explicitly to consolidate learning. Though there can be a tendency to rush to quicker methods to solve Doubling problems, such as vertical addition, this can be detrimental in the long term as a vital piece of the mathematical jigsaw puzzle can be missed.

The next step for Year 1 students on the White Rose Maths scheme of learning is Subtraction. We look forward to building on what we have learnt this week about Doubling to help us count backwards, find the difference and even halve numbers next week.
